France is bordered by Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Andorra, and Spain. France is also linked to the United Kingdom via the Channel Tunnel, which passes underneath the English Channel. France possesses a wide variety of landscapes, from coastal plains in the north and west to mountain ranges in the south-east (the Alps) and the south-west (the Pyrenees). The French Alps contain the highest point in Western Europe, Mont Blanc at 4810 m. There are several other elevated regions such as the Massif Central, the Jura, the Vosges, and the Ardennes which are quite rocky and forested. France also has extensive river systems such as the Loire, the Rh™ne, the Garonne and the Seine. French cuisine is characterized by its extreme diversity. French cuisine is considered to be one of the world's most refined and elegant styles of cooking, and is renowned for both its classical and provincial styles. Brest is a city in the Bretagne in the north-west of France, Located on the western tip of the Brittany peninsula, the city is an important port and naval base. Brest is located amidst dramatic landscape near the entrance of the natural Rade de Brest.

Due to the location of Brest it is regarded as the first French port that can be accessed from the Americas, and so shipping is big business, although Nantes and Saint-Nazaire offer much larger docks and attract more of the larger vessels. Its protected location means that it is ideal to receive any type of ship, from the smallest dinghy to the biggest airplane carrier. The Military harbour was fortified by Vauban and during the second world war the Germans held a large submarine base here, The harbour and city was destroyed at the end of the war and the city has since then rebuilt.

Places to visit in Brest include the The Musˇe de la Tour Tanguy houses a collection of dioramas that depict the city of Brest on the eve of World War II. The Musˇe de la Marine de Brest contains exhibits which outline Brest's maritime tradition. There is also an aquarium, the Ocˇanopolis marine centre. The town of Brest is not very attractive, apart from a few select monuments such as the Castle and the Tour Tanguy. A few kilometres out of town, there are more impressive landscapes, from sandy beaches to grottos to tall granite cliffs. Sunbathing, windsurfing, yachting and fishing are practiced in the area. However, even in the middle of summer, Brittany can be stormy, due to its location in the far northwest of France.
