Cannes lies on the C™te d'Azur within easy reach of the Maritime Alps. It is noted for its gorgeous sandy beaches which surprisingly are mainly public, particularly as one moves west to Cannes Bocca. From the Middle Ages until the early 19th century, Cannes was a small agricultural and fishing village. Beginning in the 1830s, foreign and French aristocrats built vacation homes in the area, gradually turning Cannes into a resort town. The man responsible for Cannes' growth is Lord Henry Peter Brougham. A respected and talented British politician at his time, he discovered Cannes in 1834, on his way to Italy. After having bought land to the west of the Suquet he used his many contacts in French politics to help develop the French Riviera. Cannes is the jewel in France's crown! The Croisette and its Palais des Festivals are the showcases of this city of parties, luxury & international gatherings, like the famous Film Festival. There are many other places to check out during your stay in Cannes. Along the seafront of Cannes, a variety of hotels, apartment houses and chic boutiques can be found. Traveling above the harbour, the old town of Cannes can be found on Suquet Hill, which is also the home of a 14th-century tower, called the Tour du Suquet, also known as Ňthe Lord's Tower.Ó Other attractions to see are Musee International de la Parfumerie in Grasse, the birthplace of traditional perfumery, a wonderful museum devoted entirely to the perfume. tour around the perfumery and how perfume is made, from the processing of raw materials right through to the finished product. According to legend, his ghost haunts the tower on some nights. Lastly the Notre-Dame d'Esperance Completed in 1648, this is a beautiful Provencal Gothic church. Its charm lies in its wood paneling, which dates back to the 14th &15th century. Also a collection of 19th century paintings. Statues of Saint Anne and Notre-Dame d'Esperance from the 15th & 18th centuries are worth checking out.
