ƒpinal is a town situated in the region of Lorraine in the north eastern France and is located along the Moselle River and is the capital of Vosges. The town of ƒpinal grew up around the 10th century monastery founded by the Bishop of Metz. The bishops of Metz ruled the town until the populist revolt of 1444. In their rejection of the clergy, the people affiliated themselves with Charles VII. In 1466, his successor, Louis XI of France, refused to protect the town and it fell into the hands of the Duke of Lorraine, RenŽ II. In 1766, ƒpinal was annexed by France. Although considerably damaged during World War II, Epinal today is an active industrial centre, with textile and metal industries and plants making morocco leather, precision instruments, and bicycles. Epinal is known as 'la Cite de l'image' or 'city of images'. This is due to its first-class Musee de L'Image which draws visitors from far and wide eager to catch a glimpse of some 30,000 images and wood carvings on display here. Epinal is also a great base for exploring some of the exceptional countryside that Lorraine has to offer. Unspoiled forests and open countryside make it the ideal place for walkers, riders and cyclists.
