France officially the French Republic is a country located in Western Europe, and which is further made up of a collection of overseas islands and territories located in other continents. France is bordered by Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Andorra, and Spain. France is also linked to the United Kingdom via the Channel Tunnel, which passes underneath the English Channel. France possesses a wide variety of landscapes, from coastal plains in the north and west to mountain ranges in the south-east (the Alps) and the south-west (the Pyrenees). The French Alps contain the highest point in Western Europe, Mont Blanc at 4810 m. There are several other elevated regions such as the Massif Central, the Jura, the Vosges, and the Ardennes which are quite rocky and forested. France also has extensive river systems such as the Loire, the Rh™ne, the Garonne and the Seine. French cuisine is characterized by its extreme diversity. French cuisine is considered to be one of the world's most refined and elegant styles of cooking, and is renowned for both its classical and provincial styles. Famous French foods include French breads, Blanquette de veau, Boeuf a la mode, Coq au Vin (rooster simmered in wine),Cheeses, Lamb Navarin, Oysters are generally eaten raw; cooking oysters is uncommon. Pot-au-feu, a kind of beef stew. Steak au poivre SoufflŽ, Cuisses de grenouilles (Frog legs), Escargots (edible snails).

Lorient is a town and a seaport of Brittany, France, in the Morbihan area and is located by the Atlantic Ocean.
At the beginning of the 17th century, merchants who were doing business with India had established warehouses in Port-Louis. They later built additional ones across the bay in 1628, at the location which later became Lorient.Later, the French East India Company, founded in 1664 and chartered by King Louis XIV, established shipyards there, thus giving an impetus to the development of the city. Lorient housed a German submarine base during World War II although the city was heavily damaged by Allied bombing raids, the base survived through the end of the war. As they couldn't destroyed the Base, the Allies decided to bomb the City, on purpose, to cut the supplying of the U-Boats. No gasoline, no food, no torpedoes and it was impossible for those submarines to go to the Atlantic.90 % of Lorient was destroyed.
Today the former submarine base of Keroman is open to the public, you can visit it all year. During the tour you can see the different pens of the block K3 and go through the roof to a former anti aircraft defence tower. From it you've got an incredible view of the harbour and of the former head quarter of Karl Dšnitz in Lorient. Lorient has a wide variety of different types of restaurants/bars. The revitalised dock land and state of the art fish market at Lorient makes for an interesting spectacle on its vast harbour. Boat trips to Ile de Groix and Belle Ile are a popular excursion from Lorient. The fishing port is the Second largest in France.
Lorient plays host to important yacht races each year and the Festival Interceltique takes place in August. Uniting the Celtic people from the Britain Spain and Brittany, the festival draws more than 4,500 artists and musicians every year for traditional music and dancing in the streets. Cider, crpes and cotriade (fish stew) are on sale around the fishing harbour, complete with AstŽrix-style village. The festival is highly recommended.
