M‰con is a town and the capital of the Sa™ne-et-Loire county in the Bourgogne rˇgion. M‰con is located on the Sa™ne river, north of Lyon.
M‰con was acquired by the French Crown in 1238, passed to Burgundy by the Treaty of Arras in 1435 and was recovered by France in 1477. M‰con was a Huguenot stronghold in the 16th century. M‰con is now famous for its quality wines, including but not limited to Pouilly-Fuissˇ. The town also has foundries and plants that manufacture motorcycles, electrical equipment and clothing.
Situated downstream of Tournus, flower-bedecked M‰con proudly displays the smiling character of BurgundyÕs southernmost town. Your greeted by a beautiful, spacious riverside landscape. The townÕs historical centre includes such treasures as the Municipal Museum, quartered in an old Ursuline convent, the Romanesque remains of the ancient cathedral of Saint-Vincent. But perhaps the true attraction of M‰con lies in the charm of its squares and side streets, especially the Place aux Herbes which during the summer months echoes to the sounds of the daily vegetable and flower market under the windows of the Maison de Bois with its finely sculptured columns. The pleasant atmosphere is a foretaste of the nearby vineyards. The M‰connais Wine Centre (Maison M‰connaise des Vins) is situated at the northern entrance to the town and is the point of departure for a journey to the M‰connais vineyards.
Macon is surrounded by vineyards producing 49 million bottles each year, M‰con invites you to taste such famous crus as Saint-Vˇran, Pouilly Fuiss. In May, wine lovers come to M‰con for the Concours des Grands Vins de France (Great Wines of France Contest), the oldest one in France.
