Car Hire Northern Territory

Northern Territory Ð Australia

Australia is the sixth largest country in the world Its about the same size as the 48 mainland states of the USA and 50 per cent larger than Europe, but has the lowest population density in the world - only two people per square kilometre
Australia lies between the Pacific and Indian oceans. Its capital Canberra is in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) between New South Wales and Victoria. Australia is made up of six states and two territories. Each state and territory has its own parliament, flag and floral emblem. Australia became a federated nation after the union of the six colonies on 1 January 1901. Bound by one parliament, one constitution and one flag.

Northern Territory is almost an entire tropical region the territory has perfectly straight borders with three Australian states with the Timor Sea bordering the intricate coastline to its north. The Northern Territory is often perceived as being entirely arid and desert like which although true for much of the interior, contrasts with the fertile wetlands at the' Top End' which includes Darwin, Jabiru and Katherine. The south is often referred to as the 'Red Centre', because of its red 'martian like' appearance typified by the Alice Springs and Ayres Rock (Uluru) region.
Although the Northern Territory is a beautiful majestic place, it can also be harsh and unforgiving since water and fuel may not be readily available and shade may be difficult find. The Northern Territory is hot for the vast majority of the year. The Top End has two seasons, dry and wet, whilst the Red Centre has the usual four seasons. Coastal areas have heavy monsoon rain from March-November.
There are many places to visit - 251 kilometres east of Darwin is World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park (the third largest National Park in the world), an area of vast flood plains and rocky escarpments steeped in natural and cultural heritage and home to Aborigines for at least 40,000 years. Katherine is 314 kilometres south of Darwin and just beyond that is Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park, a striking system of 13 gorges towering up to 60 metres high.
The southern part of the Territory is centred on Alice Springs, which is virtually the centre of Australia and the starting point to explore many of the Red Centre's highlights including Ayers Rock, which is located about 465 kilometres to the south-west. Other of the Red Centre's natural and geological wonders include Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), King's Canyon, the Western MacDonnell Ranges and the Devil's Marbles.
