Townsville's first aerodrome was located at Ross River and was licensed by the Department of Civil Aviation on 19 June 1930. The aerodrome was transferred to the City of Townsville in 1937. The present airport was developed initially by the City of Townsville, under a provisional licence to allow use of the new airport during favourable winds and when the Ross River site was unusable due to wet weather. The RAAF established a base at Townsville then the Department of Air acquired the airport and retained control after World War II. Today Townsville International Airport is the centre of aviation in the North Queensland Region. The Airport is situated on a coastal flood plain between Rowes Bay and the Bohle River, 5 kilometres (10 minutes drive) west of the Townsville city centre. The Townsville airport ensures easy access with frequent daily flights connecting to capital cities, regional centres and Great Barrier Reef Island resorts.
