Regarded as the greatest natural playground on earth, the Great Barrier Reef lies just off the coast of Townsville. Dive or snorkel amid the rich clusters of coral, swim in the warm shallows of the ocean or search for seasonal fishing haunts. Scheduled dive shows, guided "discovery" tours, marine feeding presentations and audiovisual exhibits run periodically throughout the day. Townsville is one of Queensland's premier event destinations, with an exciting annual line up of sporting, aquatic, historical and cultural events. The city is undoubtedly the sporting capital of Northern Australia, home to three National League sporting teams. The Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre is Northern Australia's largest event venue which is attracting national and international entertainment, and staging many major conventions, events and exhibitions. The Townsville Civic Theatre provides a quality program of live theatre by local and touring companies. Townsville is also home to a number of amateur theatre and dance companies providing a continuous schedule of local and regional performing arts. Annual events include the world-class Australian Festival of Chamber Music, the Gold Field Ashes Cricket Carnival, the Australian Italian Festival, the Charters Towers Country Music Festival, the Burdekin Water Festival, the Townsville Multicultural Festival, and the Bowen Family Fishing Classic. Other places to visit are The Pandora, which is a British Frigate, which hit the reef and sank in 1791, which were carrying 14 crew of the bounty to stand trial for mutiny.
